ABDOMINOPLASTY
Abdominoplasty is a group of operations performed to improve aesthetic appearance of abdominal wall.
The aim is achieved by resection of excessive skin and subcutaneous tissue with  improvement of anterior abdominal wall tonus. In some patients with weakening of abdominal muscles or hernia the procedure is medically justified..

Abdominoplasty is not a method of weight losing and shouldn't be performed in patients with morbid obesity (BMI >30).

Miniabdominoplasty is most frequently performed in young mothers with good skin elasticity after pregnancy.
Surgery is limited to lower abdomen and satisfactory aesthetic result is achieved by resection of excessive skin and subcutaneous tissue from area below umbilicus. Plication of week musculo-apponeurotic layer improves tonus of anterior abdominal wall. Skin incision (12-15 cm) located in suprapubic area,  provides sufficient approach to lower abdomen. Resulting scar is fully covered by bikini type of underwear. Manipulations in middle (umbilicus) and upper parts of abdominal wall are not required.

Modern modified abdominoplasty is currently most frequently performed type of abdominoplasty.
It is indicated in individuals with excessive skin and subcutaneous tissue in lower and middle parts of anterior abdominal wall. It improves aesthetic appearance of abdomen by:

- excision of excessive skin and subcutaneous tissues from lower abdomen,
- displacement of umbilicus to anatomic position,
- liposuction of middle and upper parts of abdominal wall.

When indicated, plication of week musculo-apponeurotic layer is performed to improve tonus of anterior abdominal wall.
Skin incision (20-30 cm) located in suprapubic area is extended laterally to groin areas. Resulting scar is fully covered by bikini type of underwear.

Majority of candidates for traditional standard abdominoplasty are older patients after significant weight loss.

The surgery consists of the following elements:

When indicated plication of week musculo-apponeurotic layer is performed to improve tonus of anterior abdominal wall.
Skin incision (35-45 cm) is located in suprapubic area and extended laterally to groin areas.
Although resulting scar is long, it is fully covered by bikini type of underwear.

After detailed examination and consideration of patients realistic expectations, Dr Pietrasik presents individual plan of surgery. When indicated, Dr Pietrasik may propose additional procedures such as liposuction of lateral abdominal areas ("love handles") to obtain better definition of waist.

All types of abdominoplasty are performed in general anesthesia.

Depending on extend of the surgery patient stay for 1 or 2 night in the facility.

Return to normal (non-strenuous) activity takes  10-14 days. Patient should avoid weight lifting (>5 kg) and increase of abdominal muscles work for a period of 6 weeks.  Physical activity involving abdominal muscles as well as sport activities may be resumed after 3 months.

Compression garment must be used for 4-6 weeks after surgery.

Aesthetic result of abdominoplasty is long-lasting but not permanent. Surgery doesn't stop natural aging process. Weight changes, pregnancies and hormones can influence obtained results.

This short information doesn’t replace medical consultation in the office.
